Elijah knew at a young age that he wanted to be an artist, and soon realized that it chose him. He credits his desire to develop this talent given to him by the CREATOR, through a local beauty salon owner who commission him for a project. At age 13, he was given the chance to design and paint a mural on a local upscale beauty salon interior wall. The opportunity solidified his confidence and resolve to cultivate his craft as an artist. This was the first pivotal moment in his life as an artist. His influence of renowned artists such as Salvador Dali, Charles White and M.C. Escher, cooperatively with middle school art teacher Robert Spencer, helped him further set out to develop his own unique style of painting.
And speaking about Elijah's training as an artist: he would express that he basically self-taught and it is all God-given outside of his hard work and repetition. He learned basics in his high school art class under instructor Frederick Edgerton for 4 years. As a student within the class, he was able to visit the Guggenheim, Smithsonian and other museums that help broaden his mind as an artist, even more. Wilson was awarded as summer scholarship to the South Carolina Governor's School For The Arts at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina during high school. That opportunity open up his horizons and he continued to glean from other art books and by way of trial and error. After exploring numerous media, he embraced acrylics.
He expresses, "I like that they are rapid, forgiving, and immediately expressive and allow mixed media techniques. I have found art to be medicinal to my soul and I realize that I am simply a conduit through which God flows."
